Obituary For Celia Chaney

Celia passed away at home Friday, January 4, 2019 after lengthy illness. She attended Musick Elementary and graduated Newark High Class of 1977. Celia is daughter to Max & Sally Goodwin of Newark CA, sister to Sherry Bailon and Lisa Goodwin, mother to Lanisa Chaney and loving grandmother, better know as “Cece” to her 5 grandchildren.

Celia could sometimes be described as the sassy middle child but all who knew Celia also knew her heart. She liked being able to help someone, she was thoughtful, compassionate and kind. She had a love for music ranging from Janis Joplin, the blues, Conway Twitty & gospel. She enjoyed singing, dancing, writing poetry, gardening, cats, but most especially enjoyed satisfying her sweet tooth.

When Celia was about 3 years old a photographer told Celia’s mother that in the picture of Celia he had taken that she just radiated “Sunshine” this then became a term of endearment by her mother, telling Celia “You are my sunshine” Celia later used this same expression of love and affection toward her daughter Lanisa. Every card Lanisa ever received from Celia was signed “You are my sunshine”.

A Celebration of life will be held for Celia Monday, January 14, 2019 at 2:00 PM, Fremont Memorial Chapel, 3723 Peralta Blvd., Fremont.

Living miles and miles apart made it difficult to see each other as often as we would have liked. During my visit this last summer, I did get to see and be reminded of your radiance (sunshine), your beautiful smile, and your beautiful Heart. I enjoyed so much spending time and visiting with you, reminiscing and laughing . I am grateful for that time. RIP my sweet cousin, I will love you forever. Billy Gordon

So many happy, funny childhood memories with you and the kids on Johnathan Drive. The last time we saw each other was at a Newark High reunions. Your smile and laughter took my mind back to our childhood, the good old days. My kids often ask me why I sometimes have a twang and I would always tell them I got it from you, my friend from Oklahoma. Rest In Peace Celia, you will always be in my heart.
